12:11 am - im in ur cage, eatin ur guineas
I accidentally left the top of the guinea pig cage open last night, and woke to find this hilarious sight:

Caesar and Pompey were mildly perturbed, but no one was hurt, and Akiko seemed to be interested more in chilling in the hay than going after them.

09:12 pm - roundin' up the troops
So, Alex and I are hoping to get married in Heinz Chapel, not only because it's a gorgeous place, but also because my parents were married there and it'll be a nice tradition thing.

Thing is, competition is fierce (it starts booking only a year in advance) and so people gather hordes of friends and family to help call. Would any of you LJ friends be willing to help? Calling would be on August 1 at 8:30 a.m.

Let me know and I'll send you all the necessary information.

I celebrated my birthday today by cutting off a piece of my thumb while chopping onions, and then spent the next hour or so trying to stop the bleeding.

[info]flurious says I look like a meth addict (later amended to a recovering meth addict).

[info]xerotope says I just look stoned.

[info]jano says it looks like I got caught in a sudden rainstorm and had the picture taken before I could smile.

What do YOU think??

01:37 am - Clearly I should have been playing at Oakmont
I went golfing with my mother and grandmother last week. The damage:

golf

I'm horrible with a driver, but actually pretty good with the irons and pitching wedge. It's the short game that kills me. The DNFs on hole 5 were the result of six lost balls (between the two of us), and since we were running dangerously low on balls at that point we decided to scrap the hole and spend the time searching through the woods to replenish our supply. Considering the fact that I lived on a golf course for a few years (my parents' house backs up to the 7th tee), you'd think I'd be better. For reference, my 85 yo grandmother shot a 60.

In other news, I've started wedding planning, of a sort. The more I think about it, the less traditional/formal/fancy I want it to be. I'm planning on having bocce/croquet/Wii set up so at least it won't be mind numbingly boring. And I sure as hell won't be posting regular updates about everything single thing I do, because that would be gag-inducing for all parties. I will say, though, that IndieBride looks like it might be my best friend for this sort of thing.

10:03 pm - life with [info]flurious
So for Christmas I got Alex this t-shirt: Not Tonight Dear, I Have a Raid....

He got really pissy, saying that the shirt would never apply to him, that he's not that lame.

well, guess what? the first night after I moved in.... he had a raid.

(why am I not surprised? :-P)

11:43 pm - cute animals
I moved into my new apartment today. New roommate [info]xerotope got me a snazzy desk organizer as a grad present. [info]xerotope's cat likes it too.

she also really likes my rubber bands (that's what she's staring at. she begins to eat them later)

In way old news, Yale House had baby birds.

They flew away.

I think I'm going to start writing in this thing again. I'm going to avoid talk of my sexual escapades and rampant drug use private stuff just in case people actually read this (hi mrs flurie?), but I feel like writing stuff again. and of course, I need a place to complain about [info]flurious, cause he's lame.

05:59 pm - oh silly amazon
Dear Amazon.com Customer,

We've noticed that customers who have purchased books by Aeschylus often
purchased books by Euripides. For this reason you might like to know that
Euripides's newest book, "Herakles Gone Mad: Rethinking Heroism in an Age
of Endless War", will be released in paperback soon. You can pre-order your
copy at a savings of 32% by following the link below.

01:35 pm - the apocalypse ... or something
I took this picture from my porch in mid-December, and just got around to actually moving it to my computer. I didn't realize how end-of-the-worldish it would come out (no editing whatsoever).

Wrath of God

In other news, I just bought my third Mac in three years. An iBook G3 for about $400, because I decided I really wanted a laptop after all. I think something like 80% of the money I've earned in the past year has gone towards Apple and Apple products. Damn.

Samos and Athens to their respective rulers, Periander and
Pisistratus; while the fable of the Horse and Stag was composed
to caution the inhabitants of Himera against granting a bodyguard
to Phalaris. In a similar manner, the fable from Phaedrus, the
Marriage of the Sun, is supposed to have reference to the
contemplated union of Livia, the daughter of Drusus, with Sejanus
the favourite, and minister of Trajan. These fables, however,
though thus originating in special events, and designed at first
to meet special circumstances, are so admirably constructed as to
be fraught with lessons of general utility, and of universal
application.

09:13 pm - my physics career ends here.
So my physics research was published a few days ago. Although I use the term "my" rather loosely--I contributed a few graphs, but it's actually [info]rose_garden's thesis. Though I somehow still managed to get second billing.

Anyway, you can check it out here: Aggregation behavior and chromonic liquid crystal properties of an anionic monoazo dye. I don't actually know what most of that means. But that takes you to the abstract, and from there you can hit PDF and see the full article. It's pretty incomprehensible, but I suggest checking out "Figure 2" on page 4. That graph is my baby. 10 samples which all performed beautifully.

So yeah. But I'm a classicist now. And I'm making $80-$100 an hour (yes, that's right, per hour) tutoring 7th grade Latin. I am quite happy with my switch.

05:51 pm - my guinea pig is famous
A few weeks ago, on a whim, I submitted a picture of Caesar in the hammock to PetsMart, as a "smart pet of the day". Well, he was accepted.

Speaking of Caesars, HBO's new show Rome is pretty hot. My knowledge of the Roman Republic is becoming useful, as I can now predict plot elements. Woo.

06:26 pm - podcasting is cool
So my parents drove up to New York this past Friday to help my brother move in to his new apartment, leaving me alone in the house for a blissful four days of doing absolutely nothing (which involves such things as: watching lots of Futurama, playing with the piggies, gaming, and doing Greek).

I was playing around on the computer, downloading various software and ripping bunches of CDs when I finally decided to check out podcasts, which I have known about for awhile but ignored because 1) I don't like listening to the radio to begin with, much less people talking, 2) many are homemade dealies with atrocious sound quality and talent, and 3) the first few I checked out were an hour+, way too long for my tastes. On my second attempt though, I found a few that were very enjoyable to listen to, dealing with two subjects that interest me a great deal: Macs and video games. My favorite so far is Orange Lounge Radio: To Go, which is a 30-40 minute weekly show dedicated to gaming. The info is interesting and the hosts are cool. Inside Mac Radio is also nice, and I appreciate the short (6-10 minute) weekday segments, even if they are littered with a few ads.

11:24 am - random musings
Today is a day to celebrate! Pompey is now two months old, Caesar will be tomorrow, and oh yeah, I'm 20. The boys are doing great; they don't run away as much, they take carrots from my hand, and they let me pet them (sometimes). Having owned them for less than a month, I am satisfied.

Alex came up for the weekend. We played a lot of games (he got me addicted to the old school dungeon-crawler Angband), did a lot of eating (I took him to my restaurant) and went to Kennywood, a Pittsburgh amusement park, where he won me a funky hat at the "Guess My Age" stand (they thought he was 29 +/- 3 years).

Waitressing is good. I like my coworkers a lot and the money is coming in. It has been getting a lot busier, and we now always have a wait on weekends. Too bad the "grand opening" won't be until the end of August :(

I've just about had my fill of summer by now... looking forward to getting back to Swat.
